# General Translation Integrations: Selling in multiple markets

Description: How to pair each language with its own Shopify market and move the Basket when shoppers switch languages.

Shopify returns prices, currency, and availability for the market selected by the `country` in `@inContext`. The localisation guides keep one market for every language, so switching languages changes only the text. This guide pairs each language with its own market, as the [example storefront](https://gt-shopify-vercel.vercel.app) does, so each language also shows its market's prices and currency.

*Note: The code extends the `proxy.ts` and `lib/i18n` modules from [Localising a Next.js Shopify storefront](/docs/integrations/shopify/guides/localizing-nextjs).*

## Before you start [#before-start]

* Complete [Localising a Next.js Shopify storefront](/docs/integrations/shopify/guides/localizing-nextjs).
* Add a Shopify market for each country you pair with a language. If you store catalogue translations in Shopify, publish each language in its market.

Pairing languages with markets is optional. To let shoppers choose a country independently of the language, add a separate country selector instead and update the Basket's buyer identity when it changes. (See [Language and market](/docs/integrations/shopify/reference/locale-handling#language-market)).

## Map each locale to a market [#market-map]

Replace the single-market `getCommerceLocale` with a map from each locale to a Shopify country and language:

```ts title="lib/i18n/index.ts"
import type { CommerceLocale } from "@/lib/config/types";
// Each language sells in one Shopify market, so Shopify returns that market's prices and currency.
// Currency itself always comes from Shopify's response, never from this table.
const markets: Record<string, CommerceLocale> = {
  en: { country: "US", language: "EN" },
  fr: { country: "FR", language: "FR" },
  ja: { country: "JP", language: "JA" },
  ko: { country: "KR", language: "KO" },
  id: { country: "ID", language: "ID" },
};
export function getCommerceLocale(locale: string): CommerceLocale {
  const market = markets[locale];
  if (!market) throw new Error(`No Shopify market for locale: ${locale}`);
  return market;
}
```

Every country in the map must belong to one of the store's Shopify markets, and every language must be a Storefront API `LanguageCode`. (See [Locale codes](/docs/integrations/shopify/reference/locale-handling#locale-codes)).

Nothing else changes for catalogue reads, Hydrogen's handlers, or [`getRegion`](/docs/react/nextjs/reference/functions/get-region): they already read `getCommerceLocale`, so each locale now queries its own market, and `"use cache"` getters keep a cache entry per market. Create new Baskets with the market's country as the buyer's `countryCode`.

## Move the Basket between markets [#move-cart]

A Basket keeps the currency of its buyer country. Hydrogen's Basket handlers have no action for the buyer country, so when a page navigation may change the market, the proxy reads the Basket's actual country and updates it before the page renders:

```ts title="lib/cart/request.ts"
const CART_COUNTRY_QUERY = gql(`#graphql
  query cartCountry($cartId: ID!) {
    cart(id: $cartId) {
      buyerIdentity { countryCode }
    }
  }
`);
const CART_COUNTRY_UPDATE_MUTATION = gql(`#graphql
  mutation cartCountryUpdate($cartId: ID!, $countryCode: CountryCode!) {
    cartBuyerIdentityUpdate(cartId: $cartId, buyerIdentity: { countryCode: $countryCode }) {
      cart { buyerIdentity { countryCode } }
      userErrors {
        message
      }
    }
  }
`);
export async function moveCartToMarket(
  request: Request,
  requestContext: ShopifyRequestContext,
): Promise<void> {
  const cartId = getCartId({ cookie: request.headers.get("cookie") ?? undefined });
  if (!cartId) return;
  const client = createRequestStorefrontClient(requestContext);
  const countryCode = requestContext.i18n.country;
  // Read the cart uncached; another tab or session may have moved it.
  const current = await client.graphql(CART_COUNTRY_QUERY, { variables: { cartId } });
  if (current.errors) throw new Error("Unable to read the cart's country");
  const cart = current.data?.cart;
  // An expired cart is handled by the template's existing cart-creation flow.
  if (!cart || cart.buyerIdentity.countryCode === countryCode) return;
  const result = await client.graphql(CART_COUNTRY_UPDATE_MUTATION, {
    variables: { cartId, countryCode },
  });
  if (result.errors) throw new Error("Unable to update the cart's country");
  const updated = result.data.cartBuyerIdentityUpdate;
  if (
    !updated ||
    updated.userErrors.length > 0 ||
    updated.cart?.buyerIdentity.countryCode !== countryCode
  ) {
    throw new Error("The cart's country was not updated");
  }
}
```

In `proxy.ts`, run the move only when the market may change, and set the locale cookie only after it succeeds. This replaces the cookie update from the Next.js guide:

```ts title="proxy.ts"
// A language switch, or a page view without the locale cookie, may move the cart to another market.
const marketMayChange = isPageNavigation && rememberedLocale !== locale;
// After handleShopifyRoutes declines the request, before the page response or locale cookie.
if (marketMayChange) {
  try {
    await moveCartToMarket(request, requestContext);
  } catch {
    // Do not render new-market prices beside a cart in another market.
    const failure = new NextResponse("Unable to switch the cart's market. Please reload to retry.", {
      status: 503,
      headers: { "Cache-Control": "no-store" },
    });
    // The update may have reached Shopify even though it failed here, so forget the
    // remembered locale; the next page navigation then reads the cart again.
    failure.cookies.delete(LOCALE_COOKIE_NAME);
    return failure;
  }
}
// On the response. Reached only after moveCartToMarket succeeds.
if (marketMayChange) {
  response.cookies.set(LOCALE_COOKIE_NAME, locale, { path: "/", sameSite: "lax" });
}
```

How the check behaves:

* **Cost.** Navigations within one language skip the check. A language switch, or a visit without the cookie, adds one uncached Basket read, plus a mutation only when the countries differ. Do not cache the Basket-country query.
* **Failures.** Network failures, GraphQL errors, and mutation `userErrors` return 503 instead of rendering new-market prices beside an old-market Basket. Because only market changes run the check, a Shopify Basket outage blocks switching languages, not browsing.
* **Recovery.** The locale cookie is set only after a successful move. A failed move, including one that reached Shopify but lost its response, deletes the cookie, so the next page navigation in any language reads the Basket again. The cookie remains a hint rather than proof of the Basket's country: a country changed outside this proxy is corrected on the next language switch or visit without the cookie.

Shopify reprices the Basket lines after a successful country update. The [language switcher](/docs/integrations/shopify/guides/localizing-nextjs#routing) navigates with a full page load, so the proxy sees every switch.
